About Brain Injuries

According to the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, a brain injury can occur with or without direct trauma to the head. Symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury (“MTBI”) include minor loss of consciousness, headache, confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision, trouble concentrating, and behavioral/mood changes. An individual with a moderate to severe brain injury may show the same symptoms, as well as a persistent headache that does not resolve, vomiting or nausea, convulsions, seizures, slurred speech, weakness or numbness in the extremities, and loss of coordination.

Countless people each year sustain head injuries in all types of accidents, including:

Often, these incidents are the result of the reckless or negligent actions of other people or companies. For example, a distracted driver running a red light who hits a pedestrian, or a business owner who fails to warn a customer about a dangerous spill in the aisle, or an employer who fails to supply his workers with proper safety equipment. Trauma during child birth, infections, and medication use can all result in traumatic brain injury too.

Obviously, a direct impact to the head, especially where the skull is penetrated, can lead to very severe traumatic brain injury. However, it is not necessary to receive a strike or blow to the head in order to suffer a brain injury. Brain injury can also occur from acceleration/deceleration movement of the head and neck, as well as rotational movement of the head. These sorts of forces are commonly experienced in car accidents, truck accidents, motorcycle accidents and other collisions.

Brain injuries can be mild, moderate or severe, usually depending on the nature and location of the forces or impact upon the brain, whether the person lost consciousness (and if so, for how long), age, sex and general health of the individual, and the post injury course of care and treatment. This is why it is absolutely critical to seek medical attention from a qualified doctor even if you only slightly suspect a concussion or head injury. Symptoms include:

  • Loss of consciousness (although this is not necessary to have a brain injury)
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Blurred vision
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Behavioral or mood changes
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Trouble sleeping (either too much or not enough)
  • Loss of coordination
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Memory and word retrieval problems
  • Feeling depressed or anxious

Traumatic brain injuries can result in physical, cognitive and behavioral changes and deficits.

Common disabilities include:

  • Cognitive problems – thinking, memory, reasoning
  • Sensory processing – sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell
  • Communication – expressing, understanding
  • Behavior or mental health – depression, anxiety, personality changes, aggression, acting out, social inappropriateness

If a member of your family was involved in an accident caused by someone else’s negligence and subsequently diagnosed with a serious brain injury, contact the traumatic brain injury attorneys at Tenge Law Firm, LLC to discuss your legal options.
