Colorado Ranks 39th in Auto Insurance Laws and Compliance

| Read Time: 2 minutes

With all of the construction going on in the Denver metro area, driving is more dangerous than ever. The work around the Twin Tunnels has made skier traffic particularly treacherous, and the construction on US 36 makes for a terrible commute. It should come as no surprise that these conditions put all drivers at risk of getting into a car accident.

Unfortunately, Colorado ranked 39th in the nation in terms of legally mandated auto insurance requirements and driver compliance with these regulations. This figure is bad news for Denver area drivers. If you’re injured in a car accident, it’s very likely that the at-fault driver won’t have sufficient insurance coverage to pay for your damages, assuming the driver even has insurance at all.

According to Colorado law, all drivers must carry the following minimum coverages as part of their auto insurance policy:

  • $25,000/person in bodily injury coverage
  • $50,000/accident in body injury coverage
  • $15,000/accident in property damage coverage

No additional coverages, such as uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage or personal injury protection (PIP) are required by law. It’s common for medical expenses and property damage in serious car accidents to cost substantially more than these minimum requirements. If the other driver doesn’t have a more comprehensive policy, you may face serious financial hardships due to these uncovered expenses.

To make matters worse, the report estimates that over 16% of Colorado drivers don’t have any insurance at all. In these situations, you’d be stuck paying for all of your expenses out-of-pocket if you don’t have uninsured motorist coverage as part of your policy (we highly recommend that you purchase this coverage).
