What is a Crush Injury?
A crush injury happens how you would expect. When a part of your body, such as your arms, legs, or torso, is compressed between two surfaces it results in crush injuries. The length of time a body part is crushed, as well as the force used in the crushing, affects the degree of damage. For this reason, victims must be extracted as quickly as possible from crushed vehicles, in structure collapses, or other situations in which a crush injury can occur.
The trauma associated with a crush injury often causes:
- The loss of a limb
- Severe bruising
- Broken bones
- Soft tissue damage
- Nerve damage
- Internal bleeding
- Organ damage
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Paralysis
- Spinal cord injuries
- Death
If your crush accident is not fatal, the chances are that it will still be incredibly debilitating. If the bones in the impacted part of the body are shattered beyond healing, then doctors may make the difficult choice to amputate the body part. As a result, you may have to adjust your life to being an amputee. Such a huge change can be incredibly traumatizing and force you to completely up-end the way you live your life. You may have to move to a more accessible home, you have to get a new job, you may even lose the ability to live independently. The truth is, a crush injury is more than just an injury, it is a complete, forced shift in your lifestyle.

Crush Syndrome
While the damage from the primary injury may be catastrophic, the complications from a crush injury can still be worse. Crush syndrome generally occurs when the blood flow is restored to affected muscles, which results in toxins from the tissues entering the bloodstream. These toxins can cause systemic trauma and can result in death if not treated correctly. Statistically, crush syndrome is the top cause of death in earthquakes other than those who die from direct trauma.
Common Causes of Crush Injuries
Sadly, crush injuries can happen anywhere, at any time. We have worked with many crush injury victims, and so we have seen first-hand just how sudden these kinds of accidents can be. In our experience, crush injuries are most common in the following types of accidents:
- Automobile accidents
- Construction accidents
- Structural collapses
- Heavy machinery accidents
- Industrial accidents
Statistically, 74% of crush injuries occur on the legs and lower extremities, 10% occur on the arms and upper extremities, and 9% occur on the torso. Where ever your injuries occurred, chances are that you have been left in a lot of pain, are facing high medical debt, and are worried about your future. Thankfully, if your crush injuries were caused by negligence, you may have more options that you realize.
