Causes of Car Accidents
“Driver errors,” which means another driver made a mistake, cause most crashes in Boulder.
These mistakes include:
- Aggressive driving, such as tailgating, speeding, passing on the right, and weaving in and out of lanes.
- Distracted driving, such as operating a vehicle while speaking on the phone or sending a text message.
- Careless driving – for example, not checking the rearview mirror before backing up or passing on the road.
- Reckless driving, such as getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Other car accidents are caused by defective vehicles or parts. Manufacturers regularly recall vehicles for defects such as brake system failures, steering system malfunctions, and faulty tires. When a defective part or assembly causes a crash, you may recover damages from the car manufacturer, the parts manufacturer—or both—and hold them responsible for your injuries.

Should I Seek Medical Treatment After a Car Accident?
You should absolutely be examined by a doctor after a car accident. First and foremost, do it for your health. After a traumatic event, you may be in shock, and unaware of your true medical condition. A doctor can diagnose your injuries and recommend a course of treatment to help you start to recover. And, if you wish to make a claim against the at-fault driver, you will have documentation of your injuries soon after the crash. Believe us, this will be very helpful in proving your case. And, if you see a doctor and you have no injuries, that is great. But at least you know!
If I Am Hurt in a Car Crash, Who Pays My Medical Bills?
Any medical payments coverage on the at-fault driver’s auto insurance or your own policy will be your primary insurance.
Once that is exhausted (and this is usually pretty quick, since it is often sold in $5,000 or $10,000 amounts) your health insurance pays. If you don’t have health insurance, don’t despair.
The Tenge Law Firm, LLC, works with a multitude of doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and other medical professionals to get you the care you need and deserve. We will work hard to make sure you get the proper medical attention and figure out a way to get it paid for.

How Long Do I Have to File a Claim in Colorado?
The time limit is called the “statute of limitations.”
In Colorado, the statute of limitations for bringing an auto accident claim is three years. However, there are exceptions to this rule, many of which shorten the time limit.
Please give us a call at (303) 219-7377 so we can tell you the applicable time limit in YOUR situation. We will do it free of charge.
What Money Am I Allowed to Ask For?
As a general rule, you are entitled to money damages for anything which is a “consequence” of your accident and injuries. So, every case is different. But as a matter of law, there are three categories of damages in auto cases in Colorado.
- Economic damages: Usually for medical bills (past and future) and wage loss.
- Non-economic damages: For losses that are harder to calculate, but nevertheless recoverable, like pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, grief, anxiety, inconvenience, and the like.
- Permanent impairment or disfigurement: Damages for any permanent injuries you might have from the car crash.
You are entitled to recover for all losses you incur as a result of the accident. We offer free consultations to find out more about what damages are available in your case.
At the Tenge Law Firm LLC, we feel a profound responsibility to ensure our client’s physical and emotional well being during one of the worst times of their life. We've put together a page of resources to help you gain legal expertise and education about the law.
Should I Accept an Offer from the Insurance Company?
Don’t consider accepting any settlement offer without consulting an experienced personal injury lawyer first. The Tenge Law Firm, LLC, can properly evaluate your situation and calculate the full amounts you will need now—and in the future—to cover your losses and medical bills from the accident. We excel at finding compelling evidence to support our clients’ claims, negotiating successfully with insurers, and prevailing at trial. If necessary, we work with accident reconstructionists and other experts to analyze who caused the crash and build a strong case to recover compensation from the at-fault parties and their insurance companies.
