Boulder’s University Hill District was constructed in the 1800s to help house university faculty and staff. Prospective owners were promised free lots if they built houses worth $2,500 or more, but it struggled to get traction. The arrival of the educational and cultural institution, the Chautauqua, breathed new life into the area because it required transportation, which inspired the electric streetcar’s construction. The streetcar ran through the commercial district and the college area.
A hundred years later, the district experienced an increase in population due to many students attending Colorado University. Styles of construction included classic bungalows and modern architecture. Today, the district features a vibrant community, including parks, theaters, meditation centers, and much more.
Muenzinger Auditorium is a theater located inside of the Boulder University Hill District. It hosts events like animation, festivals, and storytelling through media, plays, or narration.
