Common Causes of Burn Injuries
- Contact with fire, hot liquids, steam, etc. (classified as thermal burns)

Types of Burns
Although burns can be fatal, many burn injuries can heal completely with time and treatment. Burn injuries are classified into three different categories:
- First degree burns
Burns in which just the first layer of skin is affected. The skin is reddened and normally heals in approximately one week. First degree burns can still be extremely painful. - Second degree burns

However, because a third degree burn may damage nerves and nerve endings, it can actually be less pain at first, then the pain increases in severity.
