The Dangers of Compartment Syndrome

Each muscle group in your legs and abdomen is protected by a nonelastic sheathing called fascia. The fascia protects your muscles and keeps them in place. Fascia has a minimal capacity to stretch and accommodate swelling. When pressure builds in one or more muscles in a muscle group, often caused by some sort of injury, the internal force exerted on the fascia can restrict blood flow, starving the tissues of oxygen and nutrients and causing excruciating pain. This condition is a medical emergency and requires immediate surgical intervention to avoid the risk of tissue death, muscle loss, amputation, infection, nerve damage, or kidney failure.

The danger of compartment syndrome lies in the fact that the blood flow to the muscle is cut off. A lack of blood flow can rapidly cause necrosis (tissue death) and result in permanent muscle damage. Severe cases, called acute compartment syndrome, can lead to paralysis of individual muscles or limbs and the need to amputate. Due to the rapid worsening of the condition over time, this condition is a medical emergency requiring immediate surgical intervention.

The Symptoms of Compartment Syndrome

After experiencing an injury from an accident, such as a broken or fractured bone, you may assume all you have to worry about is recovering. Truthfully, it is exactly those injuries that can lead to compartment syndrome developing. It is best for you to know the symptoms of compartment syndrome, so that you can keep an eye out for the disorder if it starts to develop. The symptoms of acute compartment syndrome include:

  • A higher level of pain than you would reasonably expect from an injury
  • Severe pain when attempting to move the affected muscles
  • A sensation of internal pressure
  • A tingling or burning sensation beneath the skin
  • Numbness or paralysis (if left untreated for too long)

If you begin to notice these symptoms, you should seek medical help immediately. If compartment syndrome is left untreated, it can easily lead to severe complications such as paralysis, kidney damage, or even the need to amputate the impacted limb.

Compartment Syndrome: Causes

The most common causes of compartment syndrome are accident that cause physical trauma, such as in automobile accidents, construction accidents, falls, and crush injuries. This condition can develop as a complication from:

  • Fractures
  • Severe bruises
  • Crush injuries
  • Surgical errors

You may assume that because compartment syndrome develops after the initial injury, that you can’t file a claim against the party responsible. However, you would be wrong. Compartment syndrome usually develops as a direct result of injuries or negligent behavior. Because of that, it can be attributed to an at-fault party’s actions if that party caused the initial injury. Filing a claim for compartment syndrome, however, will requires skilled legal help.
